Looking for Good Reading??
Find it here

As I have been perusing our library for some good Lenten reading, I have come to a renewed awareness and appreciation of the treasure we have in our library.

It is a repository of collections by leading spiritual writers: Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, Henry Nouwen, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Francis of Assisi as well as many more contemporary spiritual writers.

The collected Works of Saint John of the Cross or his Dark Night of the Soul or Ascent of Mount Carmel, or Volumes I and II of the collected works of Saint Teresa of Avila or her Way of Perfection are gold mines of the spiritual life.

BEQUESTS

Have you considered a bequest to The Dwelling Place? Some of our donors have remembered our prayer center in their wills. If you are considering this you can do it very easily by including one of the following legal phrases in your will or trust.

"I give, devise or bequeath to The Dwelling Place, 2824 Dwelling Place Road, Brooksville, Mississippi 39739 for its general purposes all (or state fraction or percentage) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real or personal."
or

"I give and bequeath the sum of $_________to be used for the general purposes of The Dwelling Place, 2824 Dwelling Place Road, Brooksville, Mississippi 39739."

Additionally, we can now accept stocks. We have an account set up with Financial Concepts in Columbus, Mississippi. If interested, contact The Dwelling Place for more information.

Mary Ann Dee Dining Dedicated April 19th

Memorial plaques for Sister Maggie and Mary Ann Dee
A plaque in Mary Ann's honor (right) was hung next to that of Sister Maggie's.

On April 19 in a special dedication ceremony, the recently renovated dining room was named the Mary Ann Dee Dining Room in honor of all the support the Dee family has given to The Dwelling Place since its inception.

Roy and Mary Ann have been involved in countless ways. Mary Ann assisted with many meals and shared her treasured recipes. At Christmas time her Toffy was generously shared with everyone.

Relatives, neighbors and friends came to the dedication to celebrate the legacy that Mary Ann left to her family as well as to The Dwelling Place.

New Chapel/Library Windows

New chapel windows
New windows for the chapel/library.

No milky or hard to open windows any more!

A worker from Southern Awning is replacing windows in the chapel and the library August 14.

It became possible with a Mission Grant from the Jackson Diocese. Now we can see the beautiful view and enjoy a lower utility bill!

Jack Huerkamp
Jack Huerkamp sprays pecan trees.

Bug B Gone- Jack is here!

When Jack Huerkamp attacked the bugs attempting to destroy our pecan trees, he brought new life to all of them.

He said the bugs have three families a season. Painting the trees takes care of some of the first infestation. Two others follow. We have not had pecans for three years.

Volunteer of the Month

"Tish" Hudson was a wonderful volunteer during three weeks in July.

She assisted with multiple tasks in the yard, house and, as shown in the photo, helped Sheila in the library. She tackled any task with total abandon!!

Oh, that every volunteer would be so eager!

New Propane Provider

Out with the old, in with the new!

August 12- two employees from Golden Triangle Propane replaced the propane tank near the kitchen as we change over to a new provider. Good stewardship led us to change to the Brooksville company.

Round 'n About

Several retreatants and guests (even salesmen) have remarked how beautiful the grounds are as they have turned up the lane. All those pines and Arbor Day seedlings that we nursed for years are now gorgeous shade trees. The variety of trees and shrubs add an extra beauty, also.

We invite you to come for a visit or retreat. It's worth the trip down the gravel road (the first mile has been re-surfaced)!

You have recently received our SOS letter and will soon be receiving our Annual Appeal.

We so appreciate your response and support. This ministry cannot support itself through retreatants alone. We rely on the Christian community to assist. Any contribution you can give is so appreciated. We are all in this ministry together. Know that you are remembered in our daily prayer.

December 1, 2015 Vol. 29, No. 4

Dear Friends of The Dwelling Place-

During these last couple of months God has really reaffirmed why He has called this Dwelling Place into being. We have had many coming to seek His presence and many hurting come for healing. Our group retreats have been full and many have been enriched by the wisdom of others.

We have reached out to you in our S O S letter to assist us in retiring our debt and you have responded generously. We were able to meet our present operating expenses and to pay down $13,000 on our debt.

On January 2, The Dwelling Place will celebrate 29 years in existence. During these years, as we have built the ministry, we have built or renovated 8 buildings. Now these are beginning to need timely maintenance. This is one of the HURDLES that we meet in operating expenses. We are so appreciative to all of you for responding to our Annual Appeal.

It is with reluctance that we must raise our fees/donations for our retreats. Beginning January 1, $90 will be the donation per retreat day (24 hours, 3 meals and overnight). That would be $180 per weekend. The cost for a day event will be $45 per person. This is comparable to other retreat houses in neighboring states.

We invite you to come to Father John Bohn's retreat, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, in January. In addition to that, if you prefer, bring your own group to seek the Lord together.

Pet memorial
Memorial photos of Shadow and Prince.

Pet Memorial

Pet lovers will understand our grief with the deaths of both our pet/staff members in October. Shadow, our mostly-lab watch dog of 12 years, had a stroke on October 8 and just one week later, October 15, Prince, our regal boxer, had seizures and went to join her just two weeks before his 14th birthday. Life is very different without them.

Knights of Columbus
Knights of Columbus volunteers repair our statue of Mary.

KCs "Straighten Up" Mary

You may remember the century-old pine tree that stood behind the statue of Mary. It was cut down a few years ago. Many of its roots extended under the Mary pedestal and in the years since, the roots began to deteriorate causing Mary to lean backwards. On November 10th, KCs Gary Gist, Jack Huerkamp, Danny Satero and Peter Avioli came to the rescue and braced the pedestal with bricks and cement. Now Mary has a firm foundation!!

Magnolia Business Systems Copier Installed

William Sullivan
William Sullivan of MBS inspects our new Minolta Bizhub copier/printer.

September 1st was a milestone day here in our office. We installed a Konica Minolta Bizhub color copier/printer to replace our individual printers, fax machine, scanner and color printer.

The theory is that this will be more economical than the color cartridges and toners used in our individual printers. Now our task is to learn to use all the features on it and to see if the rent we pay and the cost of each color and black and white copy will prove to be more cost effective.

Now if it would just make coffee, we would really love it!

Delores and Mary Horrell
Delores and Mary Horrell construct our new retaining wall.

The Great Retaining Wall

The great wall of China could not have been erected with more diligence than the new retaining wall at the end of our drive built by Mary Horrell and her sister, Delores.

With the 16 foot slope on our property from the north to the south ends, the water that rushes down by the lane eroding the hillside is significant.

With bricks left over from previous projects and reinforced by rebar, this wall will stand secure in its role. Now to fill in behind the wall, Mary---!
