Extra Yarn, Anyone?

Mary is putting out a plea for yarn that anyone might have left over from projects, completed or abandoned.

Help her Honduran mission project. Just bring them to the Dwelling Place next time you come.

In Gratitude

In December the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi awarded us a grant of $1000 from the Catherine Goetz Gill Trust and the Corinne Laguizzi Hinton Memorial Trust toward the cost of the erection of a covered walkway from the chapel to the dining room.

In December The Dwelling Place received $1000 from the Schwab Charitable Foundation through the generosity of Carol Taff for operating expenses.

We are most grateful for these gifts needed to sustain our ministry here.

Dwelling Place Community/Associates Gather for Semiannual Retreat

February 17-19

As we gathered for prayer, God reminded us:"I love you, my children, and you know I have you in the palm of my hand. I will carry you always".

Encouraged by these words, we viewed Ron Ronheiser as he challenged us to put Sabbath time in our lives.

Though there was time for study and prayer, there was also time to relax and rejoice in each other (see photos).

The group also discussed various facets of the ministry and how they may be involved. They brainstormed for our Luau fundraiser and our Franciscan outreach.

Come to Pray- on Your Time

We schedule retreats at specific times but we welcome you to come privately for retreat or spiritual direction anytime it is convenient for you and space is available. Three hermitages (small cottages) are available. Just check our website and send in your request.

Consider bringing your prayer group, deacons, parish council, or a group of faith-filled friends to experience the peace and renewal that so many individuals experience here. Bring your own director. Tailor the time to fit your need for silence, prayer, sharing and input. Check our website for options available. Contact Sheila Avery, secretary, 662-738-5348 to schedule your time.

Spring arrives at The Dwelling Place

Since our Last Newsletter...

...we discovered a second dining room, the gathering space in the administration building. Our newly renovated dining room wasn't quite large enough so we moved out couches and moved in tables. It proved to be a perfect place to serve Corpus Christi religious education students after Stations of the Cross and participants from University Baptist retreat and Annunciation RCIA the following weekend!

...we hosted a day of Sabbath and Support for women ministers in the area on May 6. We decided this will be a quarterly gathering.

..we hosted the Rest of God Retreat lead by Susan Seal from Christian World Missions (May 17-18) who challenged us to observe our Christian Sabbath.

..Southern Natural Gas is causing a major disruption on our property. Three of their lines run through the north west corner and they are repairing the center line. This one was the original line laid in 1948. What does that say about durablitity?

"GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME"

Mary Ann Dee
October 18, 1930-
May 14, 2013

Mary Ann Dee, long time personal friend and supporter of The Dwelling Place, left us to enter eternal happiness to be with her favorite Loving Friend on May 14, 2013.

Mary Ann and her husband, Roy, had been Companion members of the Dwelling Place Community and were generous benefactors of our ministry here. Mary Ann was especially involved in our 25th Anniversary celebration.

Her joyful spirit and her generous heart were matched only by her gifts of cooking, quilting, knitting, excelling in bridge, and volunteering in myriad ways.

The Dee hospitality was without a doubt 'second to none'. We just knew we were expected on holidays as well as many ordinary days. Upon entering there was always an offer of a glass of wine before being engulfed by the graciousness of host and hostess.

We rejoice with her as she enters into Eternal Glory and Reward for all the love she shared here.

May 10, 2013

Our annual drawdown in the Lee Home in Columbus was a joyful experience and a very successful fundraiser for our ministry again this year. We are so grateful for those who shared in the venture in any way.

The fantastic hors d'oeuvres were creations of many and were organized by Karen Henry and served by Annie Love, Monika Beatty, and Karen (see photo). The drinks were donated by Jim Kitchens and the Knights of Columbus from St. Joseph, Starkville.

The Luau atmosphere was created by JoAnn Kitchens assisted by Monika Beatty. Guess she did her magic as shown by the smiles of Ginny Konieczki and Mary Pat Curtis (see photo).

Though not pictured, Mary Horrell called the winning and 'unwinning' names all evening as Maria Elaina Cristova and Clare (see photo) tacked them to the board.

The winners of this year's drawdown were Tony and Lupe Torrez (they were unable to attend the Luau!). Remember, winners need not be present-- but they miss an evening of good friends, food, drink, and music.

Speaking of music, great instrumental music was provided by Joe St. John and his friend, Larry Priest.

This fundraiser is becoming a 'must attend' event each Spring.
Be sure to plan ahead for next May.
See you then!

Dear Friends,

As we begin our autumn season it seems that summer was a blur. With some retreats, much effort put into needed maintenance, Mary and I experiencing hospital stays and visits with family and friends, we were now ready to settle down into a much more calm routine.

Our dining/kitchen building.

Well, that has not happened. A major water leak from an outside faucet caused extensive damage to the linoleum in the diningroom/kitchen building. Besides cleaning up the foundation, a new linoleum had to be laid AND water proofing to the exterior of the foundation needs to be done. Sometime that calm routine Will come! Anyone feel led to help us with some of this cost?

Now we are eager to begin our fall schedule and to receive people seeking solitude and wholeness as they develop their relationship with Christ.

I read recently an article by Richard Rohr, OFM, in which this quote was contained:

"Authentic spiritual life is a matter of becoming who we already are, and all that we truly are! Can you imagine that? Is the seed already within you--of all that God wants you to be? Do you already know at some level who you authentically are? Are you willing to pay the price?"

I believe that is what we are about here, with God's presence and grace, to provide a place for people to realize the goodness within and come to be all they can be. This truly gives me Hope. God's vision is always one of Hope and Love.

Clare

Grants Received

As noted in our updated retreat schedule, The Dwelling Place has received a $3000 Self-Denial Grant from The Order of the Daughters of the King. These funds are to be used for partial scholarships for participants of two healing retreats: Transition and Transformation and Rebuilding: When Relationships End.

We also received a $300 grant from Donald Best from the Lendon Best Charitable Gift Fund for scholarships for other retreats.

We are most grateful for both these grants.

Students from University Baptist in Starkville volunteered here Memorial Day weekend

Daniel and Rob Montgomery and Kessler Brown clean the administration building porches.

As Good as it Gets

Debra Ann Breazeale gives another kind of love to Prince, our aging boxer. Now who's enjoying it more?

A sample of the Crepe Myrtle beauty this summer. It was spectacular.

Sr. Marcellita Gisch, OSF, former staff member. Framed on her wall and found in her room when she died.

A rare photo of Cally and Co. Three weeks later Co went to feline heaven.

Interested in getting away for one or more days of solitude and self-care? Here is the place!

The Dwelling Place is a place of hospitality and prayer open to people of all Christian traditions. Scheduled retreats are offered two weekends each month; the remainder of the days are available for private or individually guided retreats or group retreat days. Spiritual direction and individual prayer are also available.

Consider bringing your prayer group, deacons, parish council, or a group of faith-filled friends to experience the peace and renewal that so many individuals experience here. Bring your own director. Tailor the time to fit your need for silence, prayer, sharing and input. Check our web site for options available.

The Goal of my Journey is
to Become a
Dwelling Place of God.

Francis, Model of Prayer

"As we study Francis and his attitude toward creation, we see that with Francis there was a transparency of God through others. The person never lost his or her individual value- even the birds of the air and the beauty of God's creation- God came through all of this. Francis lived in God's presence, and when Francis wanted to get away and allow the presence to sink in deeper, he wasn't trying to flee people in that sense; it was rather that his mind wasn't able to deal with all the things that were going on. He needed the chance for himself to come and really rest in the presence of God..." (Alan McCoy, OFM)

That is our call, too, when in the hermitage, not to flee people, but to take time to sink ever deeper into God's presence.

BEQUESTS

Have you considered a bequest to The Dwelling Place? Some of our donors have remembered our prayer center in their wills. If you are considering this you can do it very easily by including one of the following legal phrases in your will or trust.

"I give, devise or bequeath to The Dwelling Place, 2824 Dwelling Place Rd., Brooksville, Mississippi 39739 for its general purposes all (or state fraction or percentage) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real or personal."

or

"I give and bequeath the sum of $_________to be used for the general purposes of The Dwelling Place, 2824 Dwelling Place Rd., Brooksville, Mississippi 39739."

STOCK

We can now accept stocks. We have an account set up with Financial Concepts in Columbus, Mississippi. If interested, contact The Dwelling Place for more information.

Dear Friends,

These last months have been very eventful here at The Dwelling Place. We have had some great retreats and some major catastrophes. So many of you responded very generously to our SOS plea and we were able to clean up the dining room floor and added a French drain to avoid the 'flood' from happening again. The dining room is more beautiful than ever.

As our newsletter goes to the mail, thanks to a grant from the Catholic Foundation in the Jackson Diocese, Southern Awning of Columbus is putting a covered walkway between the chapel and the dining room. We are so grateful that it is going in before the inclement weather of the next months arrives. Having shelter from the rain as people come to dinner will be greatly appreciated.

We want to say THANKS to the volunteers who have been helping us in the library. We have culled some books and rearranged them. Then the real work started with pulling cards and bringing everything up to date. Joan Bartik, Vera Myers and Brenda Martin have helped Sheila with the tedious work. Much has been accomplished but more still needs to be done. Any more volunteers??

Thanks, also, to Karen Henry who created our Annual Appeal and Shannon Dee and Susan Baird who helped with the mailing. Thanks to Clara Hicks, Libby Thompson and her mother, Frances, who help us stuff and send the newsletter.

Thanks to all those who have brought us food or paper products! We are so appreciative for such items.

Clare

Making Friends with PayPal

Donate online with PayPal

At the insistence of our advisory board member, Francis Baird, we met with James McWharter, an IT from MSU, and Debra Hicks to search out possibilities of setting up an online store. James directed us in setting up PayPal to receive donations, planned giving donations and retreat fees. Our first opportunity for use was the Annual Appeal.

The sample "button" at the right allows visitors to send a donation or retreat fee online. While we're using PayPal as our online 'banker' you need not be a PayPal member to use it. Any credit card and/or checking account is accepted.

We hope that this ease of operation will facilitate and encourage your charitable giving and your registrations for retreats.

A Time to Cut and A Time to Trim

Corky Jones is a master with the chain saw as he follows Mary's direction in trimming the lower branches off the trees on the property. The trees have all been planted during the past 27 years are now beautiful and give shade. Now those lower branches can come off as the trees grow taller and mature. (It also helped the leaf 'population' this fall.)
