Library Treasures

During the past several months we have been updating the library. Susan Baird and the staff have all had a part in culling the books and checking every book and card.

As we have meticulously gone over each shelf, I have come to a renewed awareness and appreciation of the treasure we have in our library. It is a repository of collections by leading spiritual writers: Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, Henry Nouwen, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Francis of Assisi as well as many more contemporary spiritual writers.

For starters, I perused Thomas Merton and I found 52 books by and about him. They include Seven Story Mountain, No Man is an Island, Seeds of Contemplation as well as Thomas Merton, Spiritual Master by Lawrence Cunningham, to name just a very few.

I invite anyone who is interested in delving into the masters of the spiritual life to come, check out a book and be enriched.

Prize sweet potatoes

Sweet Potatoes, Anyone??

This summer I thought it would be nice to grace the front porch of the administration building with a potted sweet potato vine gracefully decorating one corner. When I purchased the plants, they came in packets of eight. Since I needed only three for the pot on the porch, I planted the remaining plants in the rose and flower beds.

To my delight they flourished, climbing tenaciously around and over the flowers. When I heard that Vardaman was digging their potatoes, I decided to dig ours. To my delight those eight plants bore eleven pounds of sweet potatoes!

Imagine the joy of discovering that one of the potatoes weighed nearly 3 pounds and was 10" long!! That's a whole sweet potato casserole in one! Do you call that beginner's luck or God's bounty? Maybe some of both!

Never-ending Clean-up

It is a never-ending job. Just ask Joe Haftek or Corky Jones. During the past months they have been cutting down dead trees and cleaning up the grounds.

Corky Jones and Joe Haftek

Here they are cutting up some of the 'regular' trees, but when it came to the 100+ year-old trees by Francis House, 4-County hired a crew with two bucket trucks and took down the trees limb by limb and piece by piece; however, they left the 'remains' for Joe, Corky and crew to cut them up, haul them away and burn them.

And finally ...

...remember that while we schedule retreats at specific times, we welcome you to come privately for retreat or spiritual direction anytime it is convenient for you and space is available. Three hermitages (small cottages) are available. Just check our website and send in your request.

Consider bringing your prayer group, deacons, parish council, or a group of faith-filled friends to experience the peace and renewal that so many individuals experience here. Bring your own director.

Tailor the time to fit your need for silence, prayer, sharing and input. Check our website for options available. Contact Sheila Avery, secretary, 662-738-5348 to schedule your time.
