Dear Friends,

Summer is upon us! Spring time seemed as fleeting as its blossoms--enjoyed but quickly giving way to summer foliage and heat.

Many old friends as well as many new ones found their way here to pray during these past months. For this we are grateful. It confirms in us that we are indeed filling a need among God's people and that He touches lives here.

We are inspired by the ever increasing number of people who schedule time for solitude and re-connecting with God. We are happy to accommodate varying schedules. God also worked mightily through the Centering Prayer and Christian Zen weekends. Both are scheduled again. Don't miss them.

We invite you to seriously consider the Darkness to Light retreat or to spend an overnight or two (or a week) during these summer months to "chill out" with God.

In looking ahead to the fall, we especially invite you to mark your calendars for "Friends" Day to just 'come visit' and bring a friend. Or you might consider the overnight next October 15-16 using the arts to explore your relationship with God.

As we approach the millenium there is much fear of the unknown. It seems to me the real situation to fear is the escalating war in the Balkans. Please join us as we pray daily for world peace and trust our future to God's faithful love. During this time of Pentecost, we pray that the Holy Spirit ever fill us with peace and empower us to walk in truth and trust.

Handwriting Analysis and the Directed Retreat Experience

Handwriting analysis can be a useful tool in self-knowledge. Graphoanalysis is the official name for the science that deals with the strokes of handwriting. Just as our finger prints and our facial features are uniquely ours and disclose our personality, so is our handwriting.

In the hands of an experienced spiritual director who is a certified graphoanalyst, one can be guided in personal and spiritual growth. Sr. Mary Engler is qualified in both areas and will combine the two as she leads the person through a 6 day retreat.

Please submit both examples one month prior to the dates of the retreat to: Sr. Mary E. Engler, 1001 Davis Avenue, Dubuque, Iowa 52001. Fee for the week is $260. There is an additional fee of $70 for the handwriting analysis.

To participate in this experience, it is necessary to send two pages of handwriting on unlined paper written with pen at two different times prior to the retreat. Writing should be natural writing-- not copied from a book.

Please note: You need not have the analysis done if you wish to make the retreat with Sr. Mary E.

Solitude-- Furnace of Transformation

Solitude is the furnace of transformation. Without solitude we remain victims of our society and continue to be entangled. ..(It) is the place of the great struggle and the great encounter- the struggle against the compulsions of the false self and the encounter with the loving God who offers himself as the substance of the new self... Solitude is the place where Christ remodels us in his own image and frees us from the victimizing compulsions of the world. Solitude is the place of our salvation.
